What is a Directional Drill.

Directional Drilling Machines or rigs.

The most common directional drills you will see around are either made by Ditch Witch or Vermeer; there are other manufacturers like american auger. The directional drills are powered by hydraulic pumps which in turn drive motors or cylinders in a variety of ways. Each type of drill has it benefits and its weaknesses; companies will choose different types of machines depending on the directional drilling jobs requirements. Some drillers prefer one manufacturer over the other but usually equally matched rigs will be able to accomplish the same job.

How does a directional drill work.

Directional drills are hydraulic powerhouses; they are made for raw pulling/ pushing power and lots of torque to spin the drill rods and head. The drilling rods are hollow in the center to allow water flow through them. The water is used to help keep the drill head, containing the sonde, cool and also to help loosen the ground. The directional drilling machines have a water pump to help increase the pressure of the water flow. In some circumstances different additives will be added to the water for different soil types.
